ELMIRA
In the level, fertile farming region north of Toulon city lies the ancient village
of Elmira, with a present population of 100. It is served by the postoffice at Toulon.
Through the village passes State 93. Originally called the "Scotch Settlement,"
Elmira was founded in 1838 by a group of Scotch immigrants who afterwards became
strong Abolitionists, operating a station here of the Underground Railroad. In 1843
a village was platted here by Ambrose Fuller and named Elmira. Today, Elmira is
the principal community of Elmira Township, which has a total population of 727.

Osceola
Only other community in Elmira Township is the village of Osceola, with a population
of seventy- five. It is served by the postoffice at nearby Neponset, in Bureau County.
Osceola is also an ancient village, having been founded about 1836 by Robert Hall,
William Hall, Archibald Van Dyke, Charles Van Dyke, and Brady Fowler.
